I recently did an interview with Jorn Werdelin for one of the best visited style e-magazines, AskMen. As reported earlier, watches 4 u, the ‘Handcrafted Time’ exhibition took place from the 18th of June till the 21st of June in the Time Gallery in Bern.

Elizabeth Doerr wrote an excellent report on this exhibition, which has been published on WatchUseek (click here to read the report). One of the participants was BLU (Bernhard Lederer Universe), one of my favorite BaselWorld visits this year. Bern’s newspaper ‘Der Bund’ noticed the Handcrafted Time event and did an interview with Bernhard Lederer of BLU. Below you find a screenshot of the newspaper article (in German). It is great to see that events like these get media attention! Events related to watches and especially to independent watchmaking are great initiatives but require a lot of funding, which is hard for the brands to do by themselves. By giving these events attention in (local) newspapers and television, buy watch, chances are bigger for the organizers of these events to get some nice sponsorship deals.

Wednesday Watch The new Rolex Explorer explained - Fratellowatches.com

Mar
24

Today would be the birthday of Steve McQueen (24th of March), him being an avid Rolex wearer, hublot big bang, I though it might be a good day to write about one of the new introductions based on an all time classic sports watch. The Rolex Explorer.

“Perhaps the classic Rolex sports watch of all times is the Explorer (or Explorer I, as it is sometimes referred to). Even James Bond wears an Explorer in the original books by Ian Flemming. The first Explorer models (1953) are quite similar to the current model, although it has -  of course – been updated through time to keep up with modern requirements of the consumer. However, rolex replica watch, what didn’t change was the diameter of 36 mm.”

Now, in 2010, Rolex introduces the 39mm version of the good ol’ Explorer. An ref.214270 to keep your 36mm ref.114270 company, as the 114270 is still in the 2010 catalogue.

Technical specifications of this new watch are:

Case diameter: 39mm Sapphire crystal 100/300ft water resistant Movement type: 3132 (Parachrom hairspring with Breguet overcoil Paraflex shock absorbers) COSC rated Powerreserve 48 hours Oyster bracelet with Oysterlock(ft.Easylink comfort extension link)

Please read my Wednesday Watch post at Motoring Exposure about this new Rolex Explorer 214270.

Photo Essay Chopard LUC Chronometer

Nov
05

The subject of today’s photoessay is the seldom seen, but utterly sublime, Chopard LUC Chronometer. A modest 38mm in diameter, breitling fakes, it’s powered by the Chopard LUC 1.96 movement. The movement has twin barrels providing a 70 hour power reserve, and a solid gold micro rotor for winding; not only do I think the finishing is amongst the best I’ve ever seen – even under heavy magnification – it seems that the folks awarding Geneva Seals thought so, too. Interestingly, it’s also a very flat movement for an automatic – just 3.3mm. No doubt the micro rotor architecture contributes meaningfully here; it uses an ingenious lobed cam to drive a rocking pawl that ratchets back and forth to wind the barrel in small increments. The escapement is also similarly full of meaningful detail: the hairspring has a Breguet overcool and is held in an adjustable stud carrier, the regulator has a micrometer screw and tension spring to eliminate backlash. This particular example also happens to be a special edition, omega watch online, and has a hinged half-hunter case back which hides the sapphire display back. Sadly though, we don’t seem to see as much of this caliber as its obvious beauty merits – hopefully rectified to some small degree by this photoessay. Enjoy! MT

Linde Werdelin Oktopus diver

Mar,rolex submariner replica
20

About a month ago, I had this lunch meeting in London with Jorn Werdelin and Sky Sit (cool name eh?) of Linde Werdelin watches. I had never seen Linde Werdelin watches in real, rolex 8570f price, only on their website and on their press release(s). It is [always] difficult to determine whether you like a watch or not, if you have only see them in ads. Both Jorn and Sky were wearing a watch from their collection of course, and in my best memory a watch from their ‘Element’ series and one from their ‘Two Timer’ series. Let me tell you, that the photos you’ve seen on the internet don’t do justice to these watches.

Although the watches look a bit clunky at first, when you examine them, the (sharp) edged case, crown guard and lugs are totally in harmony and have a great finish. I can imagine these watches are a typical example of: you either love them or hate them. However, as I wrote some time ago, their Spidolite model [to be introduced in Basel] is perhaps a watch that is going to be liked by a broader audience. The skeleton case (I don’t have any other word for this ) and dial look awesome on the pictures!

Anyway, I received this e-mail from Linde Werdelin, telling me about the Oktopus diving watch. I thought the Spidolite was going to be the watch they want to introduce in Basel, but to my surprise they are also introducing a new diver to their collection. The Oktopus will become available in stainless steel (222 pieces), titanium (88 pieces), DLC (22 pieces) and in 18kt gold (22 pieces). Although I wonder why someone would want to dive with a 18kt gold wrist watch of course But I guess Rolex thought of that long time ago already when introducing a 18kt Submariner and Yacht-Master, and people bought (and still buy) them too.

The Oktopus is water resistant up (or down?) to 1111 meters. That should do it. It seems that the 300 meters we were used to, aren’t enough any more for the professional diver. Honestly, I don’t know what a professional diver would need to have for professional diving. But if you are over a kilometre under water, I guess you know what you are doing and which equipment to use.

The Oktopus also carries an integrated helium escape valve that ensures the watch endures the pressure during resurface time. Otherwise, the sapphire crystal may pop off for example. And, you are also still able to use the diving instrument called ‘Sea Instrument‘ by Linde Werdelin to snap on top of the watch for professional use.

As for the tech specs:

The Oktopus uses the ever reliable ETA 2892-A2 movement. This movement has proven itself since 1982 (the additional -A2 came later) and can be found in a lot more watches from various high end brands. It’s ETA’s work horse for no-nonsense hour/minute/seconds/date watches. The size of the watch is 46(w)x49(l)x13.5(h) mm.

The stainless steel version will cost 5900 Euro and the DLC version (as pictured above) will cost 7380 Euro. Make sure to visit stand A03 in Hall 4 if you are planning to visit BaselWorld 2009.
